The Kegalle district sits at the heart of Sri Lanka — two hours from Colombo, an hour from Kandy, and surrounded by some of the island’s most underrated natural and cultural attractions. All of these destinations can be reached from Kegalle town in under 90 minutes.

1. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Distance from Kegalle town: ~14 km (30 min)
Opening hours: 8:30am – 5:30pm daily
Admission: LKR 3,000 for adults (foreigners pay in USD)

Sri Lanka’s most famous elephant sanctuary is home to over 80 elephants, including calves rescued from the wild. The twice-daily river bathing sessions (around 10am and 2pm) are unmissable. Arrive early to avoid crowds and to see the morning feeding. The orphanage sits right in the village of Pinnawala — there are good local restaurants within walking distance.

2. Bopath Ella Falls

Distance from Kegalle town: ~32 km via Ruwanwella (60 min)
Best time to visit: Morning, before tour groups arrive

Bopath Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s widest waterfalls, and its unusual bo-leaf shape makes it immediately recognisable. The falls are accessible via a short walk from the Ruwanwella–Yatiyantota road. Wear shoes with grip — the rocks around the base are slippery. Swimming is possible but check the current; avoid visiting during heavy rain when water levels rise dangerously.

3. Belilena Cave

Distance from Kegalle town: ~12 km
Best for: History enthusiasts and families

An archaeological site with evidence of human habitation dating back over 12,000 years, Belilena (also called Batadombalena) is a large cavern that has yielded prehistoric tools and skeletal remains now housed in the National Museum. Local guides are available at the site. The walk to the entrance passes through forest — bring insect repellent.

4. Rambukkana

Distance from Kegalle town: ~14 km
Best for: Train enthusiasts and walkers

The Rambukkana railway station marks the end of the flat coastal line and the beginning of the famous mountain railway to Kandy and beyond. Watching the vintage steam-hauled or diesel-hauled trains being attached to banking engines here before the climb is a spectacle that few tourists know about. The surrounding town has a good Sunday pola (market) worth exploring.

5. Mawanella Town

Distance from Kegalle town: ~18 km (25 min)
Best for: Spice gardens, local food

Mawanella is known for its spice gardens (several offer free tours with a sales pitch at the end — negotiate any purchase price), and for some of the best roadside kottu roti in the Kegalle district. The town sits on the A1 highway and is easy to combine with a visit to Pinnawala or Belilena Cave.

6. Warakapola

Distance from Kegalle town: ~22 km
Best for: Crafts, highway food, temple visits

Warakapola is a junction town on the Colombo–Kandy highway known for its brassware and lacquerwork shops — good for authentic Sri Lankan crafts at fair prices (much cheaper than Kandy or Colombo tourist shops). The area also has several active Buddhist temples worth visiting on poya days.
